Meet Brittany Ray!

Brittany Ray is a country singer from Iowa, and today, she's the subject of our New Music Now interview!

batteryPOP: How did you decide you wanted to sing country music?

Brittany Ray: Country is such a fun, feel-good genre. It’s kind of where my voice has just naturally gone. Also, there are not a lot of women country artists out there right now, I want to change that!

bPOP: When did you start playing music? When did you start performing?

BR: I don’t even remember when I started singing, but I started piano lessons when I was six. So for over ten years now and I’m only eighteen. I started performing when I was about 12, like in fairs, talent shows, and musicals. However, these performances led me to venues in New York and California!

bPOP:What is it like singing with Richie McDonald?

BR: It’s great, he is so talented and such a gifted vocalist! It was really easy singing with him. And his easy-going personality made it comfortable and fun!

bPOP: What goes into making a good duet?

BR: Well first is good vocalists. You know, people who know how to harmonize and singing just comes naturally to them. And the voices have to blend well. Then the next big thing would be if each person can nail their part and evoke emotion into what they are singing.

bPOP: What's your inspiration when you write songs, specifically Love is Worth It?

BR: Love Is Worth It relates to me a lot in the sense that I’m more of a shy person. It’s hard for me to put myself out there, and would definitely be hard for me to make the first step with someone I had a crush on. This songs talks about how if you give it a try and do put yourself out there, everything would be worth it in the end. I guess my inspiration was myself, because I would be that person who would hesitate, when really you just need to jump in.

bPOP: What do you do for fun when you're not playing music?

BR: I like spending time with friends, reading, and exercising! I like going to yoga classes and taking runs outside:)

bPOP: What was your favorite cartoon growing up?

BR: My favorite cartoon was Spongebob Squarepants. I don’t really remember watching that much TV as a kid! But yes, probably Spongebob. I still enjoy watching it occasionally.

bPOP: If you could play any instrument (that you don't already play), what would it be and why?

BR: The drums would be one of them. Because how cool would it be, being a girl, to be able to shred on the drums? It’d be so impressive! Also, I would love to play the cello, it has such a beautiful sound.

bPOP: What's the one toy from growing up you have that you can't throw out ?

BR: I literally don’t know of any toys that I was that attached to. Maybe my stuffed animals. I really loved them!

bPOP: If you had to form a band that only sang songs about one thing, what thing would you pick, and what would the name of your band be?

BR: I would sing about sweet food. Like cake, cookies, ice cream and everything in between. I love sugary food--it’s so good! The name of the band would be Sweet Tooth.
