Nineteen year old Carly Hartman grew up surrounded by magic: her father, Butch Hartman, is the creator of Fairly Odd Parents! But Carly learned early on that helping others takes more than magic, so she set out to make a difference her own way: first, by creating and selling jewelry to raise money for charity, and then by forming a company called Cora Wear which donates a portion of sales to help poverty stricken children and families around the world. Meet this teen, whose inspiring work for others is Fairly Awesome.
batteryPOP: What is your first memory of doing something to help others?
Carly: I have many memories of helping others when I was younger, but my first really cool memory is of a mission trip to Uganda, Africa, with my family. I was in sixth grade and we went because my family’s foundation, Hartman House, was passing out toys to children for Christmas. My sister and I got to speak at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in front of 15,000 children and their families. It was quite an unforgettable experience.
batteryPOP: How did you realize that making jewelry was something you could do to raise money?
Carly: I started making jewelry in 2012, when I was a junior in high school, and I would sell it to my friends. As it developed over the past few years, I wanted to give back to organizations that do amazing things around the world. I want to be able to take my talent and apply it to something that will ultimately help the world become a better place.
batteryPOP: What are you up to now?
Carly: I am currently getting workout pants for Cora Wear manufactured, and I’m really excited about their release! I am also always designing more jewelry and [looking for] more organizations to donate to.
batteryPOP: Describe the coolest piece of jewelry you've ever seen.
Carly: My favorite piece of jewelry, I know this is boring, lol, but it was a necklace that was super long. It had the most beautiful beads ever, ending with the most beautiful stone pendant. It was literally the beach in a necklace!
batteryPOP: What are some things people might not know about you?
Carly: I have a second-degree black belt in tae kwon do, which I received when I was 13 years old. I have also been playing piano since I was two years old. Also, my dad (Butch Hartman) is the creator of three awesome shows on Nickelodeon: The Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, and TUFF Puppy!
batteryPOP: What are some tips you can share with kids who would like to take action to make a difference in their community or in the world?
Carly: 1) Thinking that you are just one person and won’t make much of a difference is the biggest lie ever! Step one, DON’T BELIEVE THAT LIE!!!
2) God has given us all dreams. Follow the desires of your heart and pursue them.
3) Find a need or create a product that people will want. This way you can create a demand for it through social media and other ways of advertising.
4) Never think that you don’t matter and that you will never leave a legacy!
5) You can make a positive impact on the world and you will! Nothing can hold you back!
Thank you so much to Carly for answering our questions!
