Katie Belle Akin is a country singer from Atlanta, and today, she's the subject of our New Music Now interview!
batteryPOP: When did you start playing music?
Katie: My love for music blossomed in about the 4th grade. I sang in the school and church choirs and started getting selected for solos. By the time I was in 5th grade, I had sung solos in front of audiences off over 500. One thing lead to another, and I was scouted at a large talent convention I attended the summer between 5th and 6th grade. There's a lot more to the story than that but this is the short version!
batteryPOP: What drew you to country music?
Katie: I love country music because as a songwriter, I really understand the importance of lyrics and that is what country music is known for; along with a wide range of tempos and instruments. I love singing loud and sassy but also love tender romantic songs. The instruments found in country music really had alot of personality to the songs, banjo, fiddle, electric violin, acoustic guitar are so versatile and fun to experiment with. The genre of Country music has evolved in contemporary music today to give an artist alot of room for self-expression.
batteryPOP: Where do you get ideas for your songs?
Katie: My song ideas come from my life and those around me. Everyday is a song!!!
batteryPOP: If you could sing a duet with anyone, who would it be, and what song would you sing?
Katie: Oh woozers, this is tough. I love Miranda Lambert, and she has a new song on her current album titled "Holding On to You" I thinks she and I could tear that song up!!
batteryPOP: If you were a super hero, who (or what) would your sidekick be?
Katie: I watched a lot of cartoons when I was younger so Scooby Doo would most definitley have to be my side-kick!
batteryPOP: What do you like to do when you aren't playing music?
Katie: My hobbies and favorite things to do when not working on my music or touring are: fishing, sleeping late, watching movies, hanging out with my girl pals, playing with my dog Champ, spending time with my family, travelling for leisure (I love going on cruises!), going to the beach, high school football games, shopping, learning how to cook, and skateboarding.
batteryPOP: What's the craziest thing that's happened while you were performing?
Katie: Some of the dresses I wear are above the knee so I always wear dance shorts under them. You know when you get up on a stage people can see underneath your dress. I was out on tour with Teen Nation Tour and we arrived at the middle school we were performing at. I had left me shorts back at the hotel room. I had on leggings and my mom had on cropped leggings. So somehow she was able to squeeze into my leggings and I wore her cropped leggings rolled up... saved by my mom once again!!! ever since than we have like 6 pairs of dance shorts with us, my mom always has a pair in her purse... in case you ever need some :)
batteryPOP: If you could rewrite the theme song to any cartoon, what would it be?
Katie: SpongeBob SquarePants.... I love the ocean and the characters are sooooo fun...I think I could come up with something very clever!
